We all look for a good night's sleep after a long day dealing with work, home-schooling, cooking, etc. lt seems so wonderful to put our heads on our pillow, but how clean are they?

Our pillows receive all kinds of dirt: body oil, dead skin cells, and hair, just to name a few.

Sleep study experts suggest you should get a new pillow every one or two years. However you can prolong its lifespan!

Here are some tips to help you extend the life of your pillow:

1. Use a pillow protector case.

Using a pillow protector case will help extend the life of your pillow. Wash the protector at least every two weeks. Be very careful when drying it as some protectors are more delicate than others, such as ones to prevent bedbugs (like this one).

2. Wash your pillow every six months.

Just keep in mind you should not wash foam pillows. Make sure you read label instructions to avoid mistakes. Warm water is recommended.

3. Check its support.

Keep in mind that even if you wash your pillow and keep it in good and clean condition, it will eventually lose its support and that doesn't have to do with how dirty it is, but how old it is.

4. When is it time for a new one?

If it's foam, check for the texture and make sure pieces are not breaking or falling off the pillow.

If it's down, check how good or bad its support is. You can fold them in half, and if it flattens and goes back to its original shape you are ok. If it stays folded, it's time for a new one.
